1. Don’t Touch or Feed Turtles
Even gentle touching stresses turtles and can damage sensitive skin and shells. Feeding them is also harmful — human food lacks the nutrients they need and conditions them to expect food from people.
2. Don’t Chase or Corner Them
A turtle that feels trapped or pursued will expend unnecessary energy and may flee into danger. Always move aside and let them choose their path.
3. Avoid Flash Photography
Bright flashes can frighten or disorient turtles. If taking photos, disable your flash and keep a relaxed distance.
4. Don’t Litter
Pieces of plastic, wrappers, and other debris can be mistaken for food and cause deadly blockages in a turtle’s digestive system. Pack out everything you bring in — and help pick up what others have left behind.
Together, We Can Protect Sea Turtles
The Tobago Cays Marine Park exists to preserve the delicate balance of life beneath the waves — and that includes sea turtles and the habitats they depend on. By following these best practices, every visitor can be part of the solution, not the problem.
Whether you’re snorkeling above a green turtle grazing on seagrass or watching a hawksbill glide by with effortless grace, remember: your respect and mindfulness help ensure these gentle creatures thrive for generations to come!
